The brand Mitchell & Ness was founded in 1904 by Frank P. Mitchell, a former tennis and wrestling champion, and Charles M. Ness, a Scottish golfer. The company started out as a manufacturer of sporting goods in Philadelphia, initially specializing in golf and tennis equipment. In the 1930s, the company began producing custom uniforms for local baseball and football teams. However, it was in the 1980s that the company found new success by tapping into the market for nostalgic clothing. Mitchell & Ness began recreating vintage sports jerseys, a sector that would see tremendous success. In 1983, the introduction of the "Throwback" series captured the essence of former sports heroes by bringing back their legendary uniforms.
